Artist's Statement
The making of Art has been the mainspring of my life.
It has been augmented by a variety of work, including teaching, giving me a healthy awareness and appreciation of the world in which we live.
I am a responder to things, objects for the most part, which is my media. Tubes of oil paint, brushes and old paint boxes often mean more to me than the art they are employed to make. I collect these and much more. In making art such material is my initial inspiration – responding to things I love – usually manufactured, often common place objects. I investigate and ‘play’ with whatever object I am working on and get to know the material in some depth. One could say I learn to speak its language and dance its dance.
Trained as a graphic designer I realise and respect the economy of good design. I aim to express an idea, no matter how simple or profound, in a direct and attractive way - be it interpretative or purely aesthetic.
